Resume basics

How to write a resume with no work experience

Everyone starts somewhere. Employers hiring for entry-level roles don't expect a long work history; they look for signs that you are reliable, can learn quickly and will treat customers and coworkers well. A good no-experience resume shows those signs with evidence from school, volunteering, projects and everyday responsibilities.

What to put instead of work experience

“Experience” on a resume means proof that you can do the job. It doesn't have to be paid. Strong substitutes include:

  • Volunteer work: food banks, events, community centres, sports clubs, places of worship.
  • School and course projects, especially group projects with a result.
  • Informal jobs: babysitting, tutoring, lawn care, helping in a family business, freelance gigs.
  • Leadership roles: team captain, club organizer, student council, peer mentor.
  • Certifications that employers in your target field ask for.

Give each of these a title, an organization, dates and 2–3 bullets, exactly like a job. A heading such as Experience or Volunteer and Project Experience is fine.

The best section order for an entry-level resume

  1. Header: name, city and province, phone, email.
  2. Summary (2–3 lines): the role you want and what you bring.
  3. Skills: practical skills and tools, grouped.
  4. Experience: volunteer roles, projects and informal jobs, most recent first.
  5. Education: put it above Experience if you are a student or recent graduate.
  6. Certifications and Availability if relevant.

Keep it to one page. A full, focused page beats two thin ones.

Turning everyday activities into strong bullets

Use the same formula as any resume: action verb + what you did + context or result. Numbers help even when they are small.

WeakStrong
Helped at the food bank.Sorted and packed donations for 200+ families a week during the holiday drive.
Did a group project.Led a 4-person class project to survey 60 local shoppers and presented the results to the class.
Babysat.Cared for two children after school three days a week for two years, managing homework and schedules.
Was on the soccer team.Organized practice schedules and equipment for a 20-player youth soccer team.

Write only what you actually did. Interviewers often ask about one bullet in detail.

Summary examples when you have no experience

Certifications that help entry-level applicants in Canada

Short, inexpensive certifications can move your resume to the top of the pile for some jobs. Check what the posting asks for and what applies in your province:

  • Food handling: FOODSAFE Level 1 in British Columbia; other provinces have their own food handler certificates.
  • Serving alcohol: Serving It Right in British Columbia, Smart Serve in Ontario.
  • WHMIS: workplace hazardous materials training, common for warehouse, cleaning and trades roles.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR: useful for childcare, recreation, retail and many other roles.

List each with the provider and year. If you are enrolled, write (in progress, expected Nov 2026).

Availability and the details that matter for entry-level jobs

For retail, food service, warehouse and seasonal jobs, availability can matter as much as skills. A short line such as Availability: evenings and weekends; full-time from June answers a question every hiring manager has.

If you have a valid driver's licence and the job involves driving, mention it. Leave out personal details such as age, photo and marital status; see what Canadian employers don't expect on a resume.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a job with no experience on my resume?

Yes. Many entry-level jobs in retail, food service, warehouses and offices hire people with no paid experience. Show reliability, availability and relevant skills with examples from school, volunteering or projects.

Should I include high school on my resume?

Yes, if it is your highest level of education or you are still in school. Once you have a post-secondary credential, you can usually remove it.

How long should a resume with no experience be?

One page. Focus on the strongest three or four examples rather than listing everything.

Should I list hobbies?

Only if they show a relevant skill or responsibility, such as organizing events or coaching. Otherwise, use the space for experience and skills.
